What is Meditation

“Lead us from the unreal to the real.

Lead us from darkness to light.

Lead us from fear of death

to the knowledge of immortality.”

BRIHADARANYAKA UPANISHAD

Annette believes that any attempt to submit a plausible definition will be inadequate because everyone’s perception of the meditation experience is so personal and unique.

“Meditation offers so much more than a feeling of deep relaxation such as that felt at the end of your Yoga class“ she says. “We become profoundly focussed and alert, no longer deluded by the emotions and patterns which control our earthly lives.

In this state of thoughtless awareness lies the inner peace we have been seeking; we may have an awakening of our Spiritual nature; receive guidance or insight to resolve issues which may be testing us; accept healing or request it for others; act as a channel for divine energy - the possibilities are limitless!

Daily meditation re-connects us withour own true nature - it's like coming home to your Self!”

The main problem everyone faces is the inability to “still the mind” or stop the thoughts which seem to constantly tumble around in it. It would be wrong to suggest that one could simply sit down and “switch off”, however the succession of wise sages and gurus over millennia have provided us with many valuable tools to enable us to expand our consciousness.

Patanjali’s system lists three preliminary practices which lead towards that final state of bliss or “Samadhi”.

Annette hosts weekly sessions with the intention of introducing participants to a variety of approaches and techniques, primarily from the Yoga tradition, enabling them to develop their own daily practice routine.

Various visualisations, mantras, affirmations, guided journeys, music and recordings may be used and there is time for questions, requests and sharing.

Being truly unique individuals there is no “one size fits all” formula so it has proved highly beneficial to have the opportunity to explore different methods in a safe and supportive environment.

Physical comfort is essential and the use of props such as cushions, chairs stools etc. is encouraged so that one can be totally at ease in an upright seated posture. Annette respects that although meditation is often a progression from the practice of asana and pranayama, it is not so for everyone and welcomes all who genuinely desire to explore their hidden potential by expanding their consciousness.
