Yoga Classes
at Annette's School of Yoga

Classes with Annette are essentially “Hatha Yoga” i.e. asanas and pranayama (postures and breath control) but also reflect her personal preference for the classical system of “Raja Yoga” set out in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras ( finding inner peace by training the mind.)

It is likely to be the student’s desire to improve their physical well-being which brings them along to their very first class. The beginners classes offer students the opportunity to slowly undo any postural imbalances, physical tensions and bad breathing habits they may be carrying. The warm, friendly environment makes deep relaxation child’s play and movement becomes progressively easier. Annette’s reassurance and encouragement allows everyone, even those with injuries or illness, to progress in their practice week by week.

From the start students learn to be mindful of how they are at all times and to respect any distractions arising from within themselves, whilst disregarding those external ones!

By applying this element of “mindfulness” to Annette’s step by step approach, most students can safely attempt even the more challenging poses, often synchronizing movement and breathing.

With practice the breath-work gradually progresses from simply breathing deeply with awareness to gaining conscious control of the complete breathing mechanism.

The final stage of each session is a time of stillness when all the benefits are integrated and the whole being is harmonized - a deeply satisfying experience which lasts well beyond the end of the class. This process may involve a relaxation technique, visualisation or internalising a word, sound or affirmation. Claiming back the energy we give away to negative patterns and conditioning is an incredibly empowering experience. In doing so students gradually regain control over their bodies, their thoughts, their emotions and their lives!

Improvers Class

Annette deliberately avoids using the term “advanced” because of its connotations. These classes exclude absolute beginners and are intended for students who have moved beyond the initial uncertainties and “know what they are there for”. The sessions offer the opportunity to deepen every aspect of Yoga practice in a climate which respects that everyone’s Yoga journey is truly unique. A common drawback is for practice to become “habitual” or even “mechanical” over time, and Annette constantly challenges each student with alternative approaches and methods to keep them “on their toes“.

The more esoteric elements of classical Yoga are introduced even to beginners, but here students are actively encouraged to explore these subtler aspects and work more consciously of the energetic effects. Under Annette’s guidance energy blocks can be released and prana flow enhanced by performing specific asanas, vinyasas and pranayamas.

Readings from some of the sacred texts on Yoga philosophy and Hinduism are offered as food for thought or discussion. The final relaxation may invite some self examination and “soul searching” as a further tool for growth and transformation.
